Casual paralegal position – 6 month contract role

September 2, 2024

Massons is looking for highly intelligent and driven paralegals to join the paralegal pool at our commercial property specialist firm. Reporting to the partners and lawyers of that team, our paralegals work on a wide range of premium commercial property matters, providing both legal and administrative support.

Job description

The position is based in the Sydney CBD and we will provide training for the role.

We are looking to employ casual paralegals to be part of the paralegal pool, initially for a 6 month period, and to work during that time on an “as needed” basis. Generally, most paralegals will work with us 1 or 2 days per week, depending on our lawyers’ need for support and their university commitments. We will run a formal recruitment process once each year to refresh and extend the available pool of talented paralegals. Some of our paralegals stay with us beyond the 6 month initial employment period.

You should be aware that Massons has a history of employing graduates straight from its paralegal pool, which has the advantage of our graduates being advanced in their legal knowledge and skills, even before they complete their final practical legal training component of study and are admitted as lawyers. Whilst many paralegals leave us to pursue different careers, we are very proud of the current lawyers who have started with us as part of the paralegal pool.

Criteria

To be considered for this role, you will be technically savvy, motivated and a team player. You will care about our lawyers and clients and the outcomes they are seeking to achieve. We are looking for employees who we can invest in to become excellent lawyers, and who ideally want to develop a career as part of our team. Previous experience as a paralegal is not required, though will be preferred. You must be a current law student to apply for this role.

Ideally you will:

  • be in your 2nd or final year as a law student (but we will consider stand-out applications from other years)
  • have a minimum distinction average
  • be available for at least 2 full days work per week (except during exam periods)
  • have strong attention to detail
  • have the ability to manage a large workload under pressure, prioritise and deliver work with a high level of accuracy
  • have maturity and common-sense
  • have advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Word and Excel
  • a positive attitude and sense of humour

Massons considers that diversity is the path to an evolved legal practice. We encourage applications from law students of all cultural and academic backgrounds and invite applicants to identify any aspects of their cultural or personal background (eg indigenous, refugee, rural etc) and any academic, community or social engagement or interests (eg sport, the arts, volunteering, passions or social causes) which they believe would contribute positively to the quality of cross-thought and ideation within our firm.

What can we offer you?

Massons is an independent, premium law firm specialising exclusively in Australian commercial property law. Led by Jodie Masson and Leisha de Aboitiz, Massons has a high profile within the real estate industry and a sophisticated client base built on long-term relationships.

Selection

Candidates will be assessed and selected based on:

  • a formal written application (your application must include a cover letter or email addressing the above criteria, resume and academic transcript); and
  • a group breakfast interview session for shortlisted candidates held 7:30am to 9:00am on 15 October 2024 at our offices at Level 1, 185 Clarence Street.

Offers will be made promptly following the interview.

How to apply

Please send your application to Nicola Flach at property@massons.com by 27 September 2024 in order to be considered for the next paralegal intake commencing work on or about 21 October 2024.
